ReachOut.com by Inspire Foundation partnered with a team of professionals to develop a new website and app to help young people with practice meditation. We interviewed the project team behind Smiling Mind to find out more.
What is Smiling Mind?
Smiling Mind is "modern meditation for young people" - it is a simple web and app based program which teaches people how to meditate with the objective of better management of stress, increased resilience and therefore assisting in mitigating mental health risks in later life.
Who is behind Smiling Mind?
Smiling Mind is a not for profit project - it was founded by two business people who were motivated by the experiences of their own young families. The creation of Smiling Mind came about when the founders sought a quality web based meditation program for their own family and could not find anything to meet their needs. This in turn lead them to start Smiling Mind, bringing together a team of professionals including local and overseas psychologists, web / app developers, designers and groups like ReachOut.com by Inspire Foundation (strategic partners in Smiling Mind).
Why develop a web app / mobile app?
There are a few reasons - firstly it makes Smiling Mind accessible. People don't need to attend an event / class, it is low cost (free) which would not be possible if the program was delivered in a face to face format. It can be delivered just as easily in rural and regional areas where mental health issues are often most pressing. Meditation is a private thing - often people who are new to it may not feel comfortable in a group environment - Smiling Mind lets people access meditation in their own time in their own private space.

Smiling Mind is primarily focused on making Mindfulness Meditation accessible to young people. Mindfulness meditation has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety and depression, and improve resilience, emotional wellbeing, sleep, cognitive performance, concentration levels and empathy.
How would you recommend a health professional use this with a young person?
We recommend that health professionals refer young people to the web site and App, as it is a resource that is available at anytime. The web and App programs have been designed to be intuitive and easily accessible, and can be used without prior experience with mindfulness and without supervision from health professionals.
