Providing opportunities for young people to make connections and form relationships is an important part of bullying prevention. Learning and using someone’s name is a simple and quick way to build a connection.
Learning Intention
Students will be able to identify the names of students in their class and understand how this contributes to improved wellbeing.
Key Outcomes
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- name the other students in their class
- explain how learning a name can build connections in the classroom
- identify practical strategies for remembering a person’s name.
ACTIVITY 01
Instructions 5 min
- Provide a photocopy of the class roll to every student in the class.
- Ask students to move around the room and get everyone in the class to place their signature next to their name.
- At the end of the activity, discuss as a group the following:
- Why is it important to learn people’s names?
- What are three practical strategies to help you remember someone’s name?
- How can building connections through using someone’s name decrease bullying at our school?
Debrief
One of the most effective ways to connect with a classmate is to know and use their name.
